The Female Gaze

The Beatles, Elvis, One Direction, The Rolling Stones and Justin Bieber have all thrived on one commonality - a hoard of shrieking female fans. One Direction are not terribly talented, but they are one of the most successful modern boy bands. Why is that? They lack the musical prowess of The Beatles, yet they are able to appeal to the female gaze.

Most guys aren't arseholes

*REVALATION!* Tis true, my pretties. Most guys aren't arseholes, but I think there are a few that end up making the rest seem like arseholes. The Bryce Walkers, Roosh V's and Harvey Weinstein's of the world end up sadly giving their fellow men a bad name.

The Royal Wedding is Lame

Ooh, look, some attractive woman is marrying a rich guy, who gives a shit...

Facebook's False Friendship

Facebook is one of the few places in the world - if only places - where everyone seems to legitimately have hundreds of friends. My current facebook friends list stands at 509. In reality, the number of true friends I have is probably around 5.9. Ok, a little more.

Discussing characters on 13 Reasons Why

Season 2 of this show has recently come out; I've binged watched the first season again before starting the second. Its great to watch this show again because I'm able to look at the characters differently and see why they behaved the way they did. I think this is a good show because it highlights the difficulties of being young and going through traumatic experiences. 13 Reasons Why has received some negative backlash and controversy that I don't think it deserves; a lot of people are uncomfortable with struggles of growing up and mental illness, and probably don't want to open up conversations about these issues. But I think its important that we do have shows like this that show the dark sides of teen life in an honest way.

I'm not going to go through every single character as there are too many; just the main ones involved with the tapes. (Only commenting on Season 1. Will contain spoilers).

Book Review: 'Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls'

This review will contain spoilers. At the beginning of 2016 I ordered 'Asking for it' by Louise O'Neill on Amazon. In order to qualify for free delivery I needed something else and was recommended a book called 'Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls' (shall refer to as SN). The reviews said it was good and it wasn't expensive, so I added to basket. Around this time I was in a very bad head space; my flatmates at York Uni urged me not to read SN and to read the Harry Potter series instead. I vowed I would read SN one day when I was in a better head space.

Same-Sex Schools?

Studies have shown that girls tend to do better in same-sex schools and boys tend to do better in mixed schools (in the UK). I've had mixed-gender schooling throughout my time of education, so have no experience with attending a same-sex school. This post is, as usual, going to be my personal opinion on it, because opinions are fun to have, yay...

Reviewing 'The Surface Breaks' by Louise O'Neill

Wow. This woman's books just get better and better. I devoured 'The Surface Breaks' in a day. I pre-ordered it on Amazon the day before it was released (May 3rd) but it ended up being accidentally delivered to my neighbour's house so I got it the day after. SAD!!! But anyway...

Why do YOU care?

Why do vegans get so bothered about other people eating meat? I understand you don't eat meat or dairy products and that's fine, but why do you feel the need to get others to join your lifestyle? If they don't want to, so what? There's nothing wrong with not being a vegan, just as there's nothing wrong with being vegan.

Fe-Wail (poem)

A poem about the hardships of womanhood.

Ripping hair out of body, tearing away.
Smooth, silky flesh, heaven between my legs.
Flesh, soft as feathers, long and lean and sexy
Sexy legs.
Rip flesh, pluck, tweezer, wax, thread
Beauty is pain
Rip flesh, so I can be beautiful like an Ann Summers model.

Jungle Fever: Race, Gender and Drug Addiction

One of my favourite movies is Spike Lee's Jungle Fever. I've seen the film maybe four or five times now, and each time I watch it I marvel more and more at what a masterpiece it is. It says so much in just under two hours about race relations, gender, social class, and family. Its so interesting to see a film that explores different people's different views on different racial issues...differently. Will contain spoilers and be very long.
